Abstract


This is a retrospective study on the 5-year survival rate of Ankylos Implants placed in partial edentulous area and to evaluate the changes in periimplant bone level. One hundred ninety three Ankylos implants (Degussa, Germany) were placed in 73 patients between 1998 and 2002, and they were followed-up for over 12 months to 5 years. Medical records and radiographs were reviewed and analyzed to get overall survival rate by gender, age, bone quality, fixture length & diameter, and position. The changes in marginal bone level were measured periodically by time-elapsed after loading. Of the 193 Ankylos implants, 4 implants were removed during the healing phase and the 5-year cumulative survival rate was 97.9%. There are no significant differences in survival rate by genders and locations. The implant length and diameter may not related with the implant survival rate. Bone level surounding implants were not changed in 73%, and less than 1mm in 98% even after 5-year loading. Ankylos implants can be a good system to get a higher success-rate and lesser resorption of marginal bone to keep the peri-implant bone level.
